Murkomen insists govt has nothing to hide about Haiti mission

Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kipchumba Murkomen has emphasized that the government remains transparent in matters relating to the Haiti mission.
Addressing the media on Monday, April 7, 2025, the CS set the record straight on the officers welfare in Haiti insisting that the government has nothing to hide.
He particularly cleared the air on the number of officers killed in the mission, stating that contrary to rumors that many Kenyan officers had lost their lives, only one officer has been killed so far.
Murkomen also shared that as at now, only two officers have been injured, and one has gone missing.
The CS, however, assured that efforts are currently ongoing to trace the missing officer.
According to Murkomen, withholding information about matters on the ground would be an impossible mission because every officer is accounted for.

“It is not true that many police officers have lost their lives in Haiti, you cannot hide it because the officers who have gone there are countable by number.
“We lost one officer unfortunately, which is very sad because of the circumstances, we know that one officer is still missing and the search still continues to ensure we find him,” Murkomen said.
Adding;
“We also had two others who were injured but they are recuperating well, so there is nothing to hide about the Haiti mission; even if you want to hide it is not possible because the officers who are there are speaking to their families and country people, they are more than 700, there is no way you will say you are hiding information from them.”
Additionally, the CS reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthening communication between officers and families.
He also shared that incase of any bad news, the families are contacted first before the matter is publicized.
“We try as much as possible to relay information in a respectable manner but being very factual so that we also don’t hurt families when something happens, we ensure the family has been contacted first before making information public,” the vocal CS said.
Further, Murkomen reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to safeguarding the lives of officers noting that with the resurgence of gang activities, the government has expanded strategies and efforts to keep them safe as they continue with their mission.
