Murang’a women representative Sabina Wanjiru Chege wants the security agents to probe a certain cult that is said to be promoting female genital mutilation.

Chege said she has received reports from several members of the public and wants action taken to curb the spread of the vice.

Speaking during a public forum convened by the Anti-FGM board in Murang’a, she said the cult claims to be promoting cultural practices but it has secretly been conducting FGM.

“We appreciate our culture but such primitive practices should not be dragged along,” she said.

The Mp said women who go here to seek advice on their matrimonial issues are duped into undergoing the cut for their problems to be solved.

“Female cut is set as one of the conditions for any woman who goes there to seek any help and this is not acceptable,” she said.

Chege also said a number of women are going to the hospitals to have the procedure done and they pay the medics for it.

She said this is done with a lot of secrecy as there are no medical records filed in the facilities.

“Women are going to the hospital to have the female genital mutilation done and they are given medicine to go nurse their wounds at home” she added.

She issued a stern warning to the medics involved in this practice saying if caught they shall face the law.

“Let us safeguard the dignity of our women and girls by protecting them from such practices” she added.

Last week the anti-FGM board said approximately 26 per cent of women in the Mt. Kenya region have undergone the cut.

The board said it shall roll out a massive sensitization program in the area to create awareness among the residents about the vice.
