Kamkunji Member of Parliament Yusuf Hassan has voiced concerns over the disorderly conduct witnessed during the ongoing African Nations Championship (CHAN) matches in Nairobi, cautioning that such behaviour could jeopardise Kenya’s aspirations in international football.

According to the legislator, Kenyans need to be aware of the rules governing the sports industry to avoid any ban in the future. He made his remarks on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, while speaking in an interview with a local media house.

“Kenyans do not realise that they are damaging the business that may affect them in the long run because there are rules and regulations,” Hassan said.

Further adding, “Kenyans are naturally aggressive in everything they do, and in this case, some entrepreneurs are seizing the opportunity to make a quick profit. However, they fail to realise that their actions are harming a business that could benefit them in the long run, as there are rules and regulations in place.”

Meanwhile, his comments come in the wake of multiple security breaches at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, including overcrowding, unauthorised access, and ticketing fraud.

Hassan emphasised the importance of learning from countries like Tanzania and South Africa, where sports events are conducted with high levels of discipline and safety.

“If you go to Tanzania for a sports event, you will not see anyone pushing or shoving. You can go with children, and you feel completely safe while attending those events. South Africa is the same,” he said.

The lawmaker called on the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) and the CHAN Local Organising Committee (LOC) to implement stricter crowd control measures and enforce existing regulations to ensure the safety and enjoyment of all attendees.

“After CHAN, what the federation must do is to come together and make sure we put some discipline in the path of staging such tournaments because the crowds would have been easily controlled if the system were working very well,” Hassan said.

Likewise, the legislator has called on the sports officials to educate Kenyan football fans on the match regulations to avoid any future ban.

“There must be lessons learnt, and take our citizens along; they must make sure we avoid any ban,” Hassan stated.
