Mosiria vows tougher crackdown on Nairobi churches over noisy keshas

Nairobi Environment Chief Officer Geoffrey Mosiria has once again taken a hard line on churches that continue to flout noise regulations with endless night keshas, saying the era of impunity is coming to an end.
Speaking at the Nairobi edition of the Jukwaa la Usalama event hosted by Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen on Thursday, October 2, 2025, Mosiria said that churches disturbing residents with amplified sound systems through Sunday-to-Sunday overnight vigils would face unconditional closure.
“All churches must adhere to the law and stop unnecessary noise pollution caused by Sunday-to-Sunday night keshas with amplified sound system,” Mosiria wrote on TikTok.
He emphasised that this was not the first time he had raised the matter but warned that this time enforcement would be more severe and uncompromising.
Mosiria insisted that all places of worship must respect the law and the rights of Nairobi residents, noting that countless families and school-going children continue to suffer sleepless nights due to excessive noise from religious gatherings.
He said government agencies had already been tasked to work hand in hand to ensure compliance, adding that the days of endless warnings were over.

Beyond the issue of noisy keshas, Mosiria outlined a series of additional measures he intends to push through.
These include the unconditional closure of all illegal dumping sites across the city and a renewed crackdown on bars, restaurants and nightclubs operating without permits or those situated near schools and residential estates.
On the same note, Mosiria also issued a strong call for Nairobi’s educated but jobless youth to be prioritised during police recruitment exercises.
“All illegal dumping sites will be closed down will be closed unconditionally. All bars, restaurants, and nightclubs operating illegally and causing noise pollution near schools or residential areas will be shut down without further notice. Nairobi-educated jobless youths be given an opportunity in the recruitment of police officers,” Mosiria wrote.
He said these interventions would not only restore order but also create a safer and more liveable city.
“These actions will be achieved through close collaboration with all government agencies and wananchi.”
