Former Trade Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria has voiced strong support for Bondo ACK Bishop David Kodia’s call to end handout sessions, often known as empowerment forums, urging the government to focus on creating real jobs through sustainable economic reforms.

In an X post on Friday, October 17, 2025, just hours after Raila Odinga’s state funeral, Kuria noted that Bishop Kodia’s message highlighted the dangers of conditioning citizens to expect monetary giveaways rather than meaningful employment opportunities.

“Bishop David Kodia today declared an end to the hand-out sessions otherwise christened Empowerment Forums,” Kuria wrote.

He also suggested that some leaders may have failed to grasp the depth of the message, signalling that the empowerment initiatives widely promoted by officials could be misaligned with the urgent need for meaningful economic reform.

“To some friends of mine. English sometimes is hard. He asked us instead to focus on creating real jobs by fixing the economy. In case you missed the memo, guys,” he added.

Bishop Kodia, speaking during the State Funeral at Nyayo Stadium, castigated leaders who entice citizens with money instead of providing lasting solutions and urged politicians to follow the late ODM Party leader’s example.

He praised Raila for his wisdom, courage, and unwavering commitment to unity, noting that he never allowed personal gain to dictate his leadership and that his legacy serves as a moral compass for the nation.

“Baba never used the power of money to intimidate people. Today, we have bad manners among our politicians. They have taught our people the culture of handouts,” Bishop Kodia said as mourners applauded in agreement.

He went on to challenge leaders to reflect on the legacy of the late Raila Odinga, saying that the former prime minister led with courage, wisdom and a vision for a united Kenya.

“If there’s anyone here at whatever level who has looted this country, you stand the chance to be condemned. God gave Raila Odinga the wisdom to unite Kenyans. How many can fit in his shoes? As we honour him today, let’s see ourselves as Kenyans first and not our regions, where we come from. Kenya is too small to be divided into regions,” Bishop Kodia said.

Raila Odinga, who served as Kenya’s Prime Minister between 2008 and 2013, passed away on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, at an Ayurvedic hospital in Koothattukulam, Kerala, India, following a cardiac arrest.

He was 80 years old.

His passing plunged the nation into mourning, culminating in a state funeral attended by thousands of Kenyans and several African leaders, highlighting his enduring legacy as a reformer and unifier whose influence extended far beyond politics.
