There was a moment of unexpected interruption and raw emotion during the burial of Karangu Muraya’s brother in Murang’a County after a woman stepped forward to appeal for urgent financial help to bury her mother.

The woman, identified as Wairimu, addressed mourners and leaders present at the funeral, explaining that her family had been unable to lay her mother to rest due to an overwhelming hospital bill.

She recounted that her mother fell ill on February 7 and was first admitted to Nyahururu General Hospital, where she underwent surgery. However, her condition deteriorated, prompting a referral to another medical facility for further treatment.

“I am Wairimu, and my mum got sick on February 7. We took her to Nyahururu General Hospital, where she was operated on, but her condition worsened, and she was referred to another hospital,” Wairimu said during the burial held on Wednesday, April 22, 2026.

Despite medical efforts, her mother passed away on March 20. Wairimu revealed that more than a month later, the family had still not managed to conduct the burial, as the body remained in the mortuary due to an outstanding hospital bill amounting to Ksh1.2 million.

She explained that she lacked the financial means to clear the bill and described her family as stranded and unable to move forward with burial arrangements.

“On March 20, she passed away. It has now been one month and two days since she died, and we have not been able to bury her because she incurred a hospital bill of Ksh1.2 million. I do not have the ability to pay, and we are stranded. Her body is still in the mortuary,” she added.

Her emotional appeal momentarily shifted the focus of the burial ceremony, drawing the attention of mourners and leaders in attendance. Among those present was former president Ruto’s economic advisor, Moses Kuria, who responded to the plea with a firm commitment to intervene.

Kuria assured the family that they should proceed with the burial plans without worrying about the financial burden.

He pledged to take full responsibility for settling both the hospital bill and the burial expenses, effectively lifting the weight that had delayed the family’s ability to lay their loved one to rest. He further indicated that he would personally attend the burial once arrangements were made.

“Sorry so much, Wairimu. From now on, you may go and plan the burial, and where the money for that bill and the burial will come from, that is my business. I will take care of it, and I will also attend the burial,” Kuria said.
