Detectives in Mombasa on Monday morning thwarted a major terror attack plan targeting police stations within Likoni, Mombasa County.
According to one of the special forces, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter, maps and information detailing the location and specifications of three police stations and a supermarket targeted for attacks were also found in their possession.
The security establishments that were being targeted were Makupa Police Station, Central Police Station and Naivas Supermarket in Nyali.
Police sources confided to K24 Digital that the duo were in communication with a suspect who is believed to have been picked by the authorities around Old Town on Thursday, August 19.
The source further said the two suspects were on a revenge mission after the suspect was arrested.
Details have further emerged that the operation was highly classified and restricted to the team that conducted the operation.
“We have been monitoring communication, among the suspect who was arrested by police last week. Their aim was to rescue one of their operatives who is in police custody who revealed to detectives the identity of the two suspects,” said a senior officer.
The same source informed this writer that the suspects are being detained at an undisclosed location where they are undergoing further interrogation.
Coast region police commander Manasseh Musyoka said the operation was successfully conducted but declined to divulge more details in relation to the recovery of firearms and the arrest of two terror suspects.
“About the Liikoni incident, we managed to arrest two suspects who are already in police custody after a successful operation following intelligence reports at the ferry crossing channel,” he said.
The two were allegedly planning to attack a police station.
In a well-organized operation, Recce squad officers, deployed from Nairobi, arrived in Mombasa on Sunday awaiting the arrival of the two who had reportedly managed to sneak from Congo.
The two suspected terrorists left Lunga Lunga on Sunday and their movements and communication were closely being monitored.
While waiting to cross the ferry to the island town of Mombasa, detectives who were tracking them arrived 30 minutes earlier and pounced on them in their Toyota Probox.
“Detectives had tracked them for days and pitched camp in Kwale county, waiting for them to cross over from Lunga Lunga,” said a detective
During the raid, detectives recovered two AK 47 rifles, two fully loaded magazines, 2 machetes and a piece of assorted equipment used for assembling explosives.
