Suba North Member of Parliament (MP) Millie Odhiambo has raised an alarm about the rise in targeted assassinations in the country following the fatal killing of prominent city lawyer Mathew Kylo Mbobu.

Mbobu, a distinguished lawyer and former Chairperson of the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal (PPDT), was fatally shot by unknown assailants in a drive-by attack before the attackers sped off on a motorcycle on Tuesday evening, September 9, 2025.

In a statement shared on her official social media accounts, Odhiambo condemned Mbobu’s murder, noting that it comes shortly after the killing of a Member of Parliament.

“The assassination of prominent lawyer Kyalo Mbobu is shocking. This follows soon after a similar assassination of a Member of Parliament. What is happening to humanity? Why do some people find it easy to kill a fellow human being?” Millie Odhiambo stated.

The vocal lawmaker further called on law enforcement agencies to move swiftly in their investigations and bring the perpetrators to justice.

“I hope the perpetrators are brought to book. Meanwhile, we need to interrogate why such cases seem to be on the rise,” she urged.

Mbobu’s death

The city lawyer was shot dead in Nairobi on the evening of September 9, 2025.

According to the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), Mbobu, an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya with over 30 years of practice, was fatally shot by unknown assailants in a drive-by attack before the attackers sped off on a motorcycle.

“This most unfortunate occurrence marks a sad day for the legal profession and for the entire country. We convey our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Mr. Mbobu,” LSK President Faith Odhiambo said in a statement.

“Too often, advocates have been victimised and targeted for the work they do. This incident and other acts of violence against advocates represent a damning test to the administration of justice.”

Call for justice

Calling for swift investigations, the LSK urged the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to act urgently in tracking down the killers.

“We decry this detestable act and demand that the perpetrators be hunted down and brought to book,” Odhiambo emphasised.

“The free reign of crime in our streets is an affront to the liberties and lawfulness that makes Kenya a Constitutional Democracy. Our security agencies must act decisively to end this menace,” the LSK president said.

Mbobu’s killing has sparked outrage and renewed calls for better protection of legal practitioners in the country.
