Meru politician Michael Makarina has issued a stern warning to Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, cautioning that his money donations and empowerment initiatives may ultimately backfire, potentially costing him support and handing the seat to Gladys Wanga.

Speaking during an interview with a local YouTuber on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, Makarina said that Kindiki’s attempts to win over voters in Meru through financial largesse would not guarantee success, particularly as he fails to connect with the local artistes and grassroots constituents.

“Kindiki will not even see the Meru artistes. So where does he expect to win? He has been given the position of Deputy President, but he does not want to engage. We tell him, ‘Thank you, Mr President, for giving our son that seat, but Kindiki must understand that the role was given to bring Ruto votes, not general Kenyan votes. He cannot deliver for Kenya. Had Ruto intended, he would have brought Joho, Mudavadi, and Aden Duale votes,” Makarina said.

He added that if Kindiki assumes that his relationship with Ruto will secure him support in the event of failure, he would be surprised to find Gladys Wanga poised to take the President’s backing.

He insisted that the money he doles out under the pretext of empowerment is utterly misguided and cautioned that he will be left alone, nursing disappointment, if he fails to deliver the Mt Kenya votes he promises Ruto.

“Most likely, if Kindiki thinks that his friend Ruto will save him when he fails to deliver, he will be shocked to see Gladys Wanga as Deputy President. Kindiki will be surprised. All this juggling of money and bags, claiming it is empowerment, he will be amazed,” Makarina said.

Makarina further criticised Kindiki’s approach, insisting that he should have implemented structured programmes instead of indiscriminate handouts.

“Kindiki should have programmes. Now he is just handing out money for what? For going home? What empowerment is that at home? There are artistes at home, like Karimi and Bruno, who can perform and inform people why Ruto is president, but Kindiki, though a professor, has attained power and forgotten that he is a professor,” he said.

He also highlighted the disconnect between Kindiki and the community of persons with disabilities, pointing out that despite their continuous support for him, he fails to understand or acknowledge their needs.

He cited the recent rallies called by the Deputy President, saying they are so overcrowded that not a single person with a disability dares to attend for fear of being trampled.

“If you ask, the disabled wanted something, which is why we supported him day and night to become deputy president. He cannot speak. He cannot understand. He calls meetings every day even when no disabled person is present, yet people are crowded and no disabled person can attend,” Makarina noted.
