Former Chief Justice David Maraga has ruled out any possible collaboration with President William Ruto, even as he beefs up his political muscle ahead of the 2027 general polls.

In a clip on his X account on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, the legal veteran, however, said he is open to collaboration with other leaders in areas that are in tandem with his values.

Atakuwa amekuwa voted out. How can I work with him? I cannot. We cannot. Because his values are completely different from mine,” he said.

Tutaangalia, tutakaa. Kila mtu tutakaa tuulizane unataka kufanyia nini Wakenya. I’m open, but kama mienendo na record yako haifuati vile inafaa, itakuwa vigumu kufanya kazi pamoja na wao.”

This comes as the United Opposition leaders continue to deliberate on who will be the flagbearer in the 2027 polls. Each has already declared interest, with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua leading the race, publicly saying he is the sole challenger capable of unseating Ruto in 2027.

Maraga has been critical of the government over human rights violations and corruption, which he says have bedevilled the country. He has, since, as part of his pledges to the electorate, reaffirmed that he will fix the country and give it back to Kenyans.

Maraga on Ruto

Maraga has said that no Kenyan president has ever been hated like President William Ruto by Kenyans, warning that the country risks sliding into a failed state if laws are ignored.

Speaking during an interview on a local radio station on Monday, September 15, 2025, he explained that the widespread dislike reflects a deeper national crisis.

“Ruto sikifiri iko rais ambao watu wamechukia urais wake zaidi kama Ruto. Hio inakuambia mambo mengi sana,” he stated loosely, translating to: In my view, there has never been a president whose leadership Kenyans have disliked more than Ruto’s. This says a lot about the many issues we are facing.”

He highlighted that the public’s displeasure stems from failures across multiple sectors of government.

“In my view, there has never been a president whose leadership Kenyans have disliked more than Ruto’s. This says a lot because things are going wrong everywhere,” he said, pointing to governance, accountability, and policy implementation as key areas of concern.
