The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) has officially opened its portal for 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) candidates to apply for degree courses.

In a notice dated Friday, March 28, 2025, KUCCPS announced that the qualified students can now log in to its portal and select their preferred programmes in universities and colleges across the country.

The application process allows candidates to choose courses based on their KCSE performance, ensuring they meet the required cluster points for their desired programmes.

In addition to degree courses, KUCCPS has also invited candidates who sat for their KCSE exams between 2000 and 2024 to apply for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programmes and Teacher Training College (TTC) courses.

The deadline for applications is April 21, 2025. Candidates are advised to apply early to avoid last-minute inconveniences.

“Attention 2024 KCSE cohort! You can now apply for degree courses via the @KUCCPS_Official portal. Deadline: April 21,” KUCCPS announced.

Entry points

On Thursday, February 27, 2025, the Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Julius Ogamba said that the minimum requirement for university entry, which will apply to the 2024 KCSE cohort, is a mean grade of C+ (plus).

Furthermore, the CS added that all 246,391 students from the 2024 KCSE cohort who attained a C+ (plus) and above are eligible for university admission.

“The government has not reintroduced cut-off points for admission to university. The minimum admission requirement to university, which will apply to the 2024 KCSE cohort, is a mean grade of C+ (plus). Therefore, all the 246,391 students who attained a mean grade of C+ (plus) and above qualify for university admission,” the Education CS said.

University funding

Clarifying concerns regarding the cost of funding university education for the 2024 KCSE cohort, Ogamba stated that the estimated annual cost to fund the education of all 246,391 eligible students is Ksh. 25.85 billion, contrary to claims that it would cost Ksh100 billion.

He added that the Ksh100 billion figure represents the total cost over four years, not the annual funding requirement.

“Contrary to reports appearing in sections of the media, it will not cost Ksh100 billion to fund the university education of the 2024 KCSE cohort. The ministry’s projection is that if all the 246,391 candidates join the university, Ksh25.85 billion will be required to fund their education every year. The projection of Ksh100 billion will be the total cost over a four-year period,” he clarified.
