The Kitui County government on Wednesday night fumigated all public places in Kitui town to curb the spread of coronavirus.

Governor Charity Ngilu said the fumigation initiative is one of the key measures by the county in the fight against the spread of the highly infectious virus.

‘To this effect, the activity commencing today will extend to other key public places in the county,’ said Ngilu.

She disclosed that a cross-section of health workers have received required training on handling the COVID-19 cases to ensure safety in the county’s health facilities.

Governor Ngilu said that public places including factories, supermarkets, banks, restaurants and slaughterhouses among others must avail water for handwashing under close supervision of the Ministry of Health.

The county has suspended all market days until further notice whereas bar patrons are not allowed to drink within the premises but can buy over the counter and take away their drinks.

Ngilu called on the County Ministry of Health in coordination with National Government and faith-based bodies to embark on educating the public on the Coronavirus and related hygiene issues.

Similarly, she noted that the county has set aside isolation wards at the Kitui Referral, Kauwi and Mwingi Level four Hospitals.

A joint coordination team has been put in place to file daily progress reports on coronavirus with the Governor and Kitui County  Commissioner’s offices.

The teams will closely work with the office of the County Commissioner and will be supported by county administrators for easy communication.
