Kindiki reveals Ruto’s reason for assigning KDF hospital project in Meru

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has revealed that President William Ruto has recently assigned the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) to build a Level 6 hospital in Meru County, and firmly defended the move, saying it is guided by intentions to avoid unnecessary delays.
Speaking in Meru County on Monday, August 4, 2025, Kindiki explained that the decision to deploy the military for the hospital’s construction was not political, but a deliberate strategy to ensure that the facility is completed within one year, as per the President’s directive.
He criticised those questioning the government’s legitimacy and ridiculing its decisions, saying such debates should not arise at a time when tangible projects aimed at improving lives are underway.
“The presence of us government has meaning. Now, you can see that I am Deputy President, and because I come from this area, progress is being made. Then others bring in twisted Swahili, saying we should leave the government because those who had the job before us failed. So now, just because of that, we should also exit government? Absolutely not.”

He stated that the time to talk about who should be in government or who will be the next president will come later, but for now, development must continue uninterrupted.
Kindiki maintained that despite criticism, the government remains focused on delivering its mandate, especially in critical sectors like health.
“We cannot be talking about leaving government. Let us first complete the new Level 6 hospital. What is the problem with that? Once we are done, then we can start talking about who will be president and who will not.”
The Deputy President pointed out that the use of the military is meant to cut down bureaucracy and inefficiency, noting that KDF has previously demonstrated its capacity to complete large-scale infrastructure swiftly.
He gave the example of a stadium in Nairobi, which he said was completed under the supervision of KDF, saying similar speed and discipline are expected in the Meru hospital project.
According to him, contractors in the private sector would have taken up to three years to complete the new wing, a delay the government is unwilling to entertain.
“For now, there is already a contract to upgrade Meru Hospital to a Level 6 facility. The president wants the project done immediately, and he has directed that the new wing be completed within a year.”
Kindiki clarified that the soldiers will not be coming for combat, but to manage and implement the construction work.
He announced that on Thursday, August 7, he would return to Meru alongside President Ruto and senior KDF officers to officially flag off the works at Meru Hospital.
“This coming Thursday, I will be here in Meru with the president. So the Level 6 hospital will be supervised and constructed by the military. I will return to Meru Hospital on Thursday, August 7, with the soldiers. And let it be clear the military is not coming for war. They are coming to build.”

While dismissing calls for some leaders to abandon government roles due to political differences, Kindiki stressed that the administration remains intact and fully committed to its two-term development agenda.
He reiterated that the conversation about future leadership will be held in due course, but for now, the focus must remain on delivering results for Kenyans.
“And let me remind everyone, we are in a two-term government.”
