In a precedent-setting ruling, Nairobi Chief Magistrate Francis Andayi on Friday gave Keroche Breweries owner Joseph Karanja seven days to get Sh2 million cash bail to secure his freedom.
Tabitha Karanja and her husband were arraigned and pleaded not guilty to 10 counts of tax evasion related to Sh14.4 billion that the Director of Public Prosecution Noordin Haji claimed their firm failed to remit to the taxman.
Tabitha, who is the chief executive officer of the beer firm, was ordered to pay Sh10 million cash bail while the husband — who is the firm’s chairman — will part with Sh2 million.
Their firm has also been charged and has to pay Sh15 million cash bail, giving the total amount the couple will pay in bail to Sh27 million.
