Kenya’s icy relationship with Tanzania has started thawing after government officials visited the neighbouring country to return their gold that was seized in Nairobi.

A delegation led by Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Monica Juma and Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji took the consignment to Dar.

The 35kg haul was seized by Kenyan police in Nairobi and has now been returned as the two countries partner to fight illicit trade.

The gold was received by Tanzanian President John Pombe Magufuli.

K24 Digital estimates the value of the gold to be Sh172 million since a kilogram of the precious metal retails at €42 041 (Sh4.9 million), according to online gold seller www.bullionbypost.eu.

The goodwill gesture comes weeks after President Uhuru Kenyatta visited Mr Magufuli at his home in Tanzania in bid to iron out trade differences between the two nations.
