Kenya Airways (KQ) has issued a statement regarding the delays experienced by its flights at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) earlier today September 26, 2024.

The airline attributed the disruptions to extended maintenance work on fuel hydrants that exceeded the planned schedule.

In the customer update, the airline acknowledged that these maintenance issues had caused significant delays in morning flight departures, which affected travellers across multiple destinations.

“We regret to inform you that due to an extended maintenance period on the fuel hydrants at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, we experienced delays in our morning flight departures today,” KQ said in a statement.

However, Kenya Airways reported that operations have since normalized, and most of the delayed flights have now departed.

“Our dedicated teams are working tirelessly to recover our departure and arrival schedule by midday today,” the airline stated, expressing appreciation for the understanding and patience of its customers during this challenging time.

Kenya Airways extended its sincerest apologies for the inconvenience caused to its passengers and reassured them of its commitment to providing excellent service.

The airline encouraged affected customers to reach out for assistance through various channels, including phone, WhatsApp, and social media.

Travelers are urged to check with Kenya Airways for the latest updates on their flight schedules as the airline continues to work towards stabilizing its operations.

As the national carrier seeks to minimize disruptions and enhance customer experience, this incident highlights the ongoing challenges airlines face in maintaining operational efficiency, particularly amid infrastructural upkeep at busy airports.

JKIA is a critical gateway not only for Kenya but for the wider East and Central Africa region, serving as a hub for both regional and international travel.

Delays of this nature can have a cascading effect on the aviation industry, particularly for passengers connecting through Nairobi to other African and global destinations.

As travel begins to ramp up, maintaining operational efficiency and minimizing disruptions will be critical for the smooth functioning of JKIA which has been dominating headlines for weeks over the Adani takeover deal.

For now, passengers remain hopeful that normal operations will resume fully by day’s end.

  1. Wow, this post gave a great overview of the situation at JKIA! I appreciate the details on Kenya Airways’ attempts to manage the delays. Quick question: how often do these delays typically occur, or is it more of a one-off scenario?

Also, regarding prices for flights, I found this site, https://world-prices.com/en/kenya/prices. Not sure how reliable or updated it is, but it could be worth checking out for comparison. Keep up the great work on the travel insights!
