The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced that a section of Thika Superhighway will experience a temporary traffic disruption at Kihunguro, affecting both the Nairobi-bound and Thika-bound service lanes.

According to a public notice issued on Monday, October 13, 2025, the disruption will begin on Monday, October 20, 2025, and continue until Saturday, December 20, 2025.

“The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) wishes to notify the public that a section of Thika Superhighway (A2) Road at Kihunguro will experience traffic disruption along the Nairobi and Thika-bound service lanes from Monday, 20th October, 2025, to Saturday, 20th December, 2025.”

The authority said the closure is necessary to allow for the construction of column bases and stub columns for the upcoming Kihunguro footbridge, which will enhance pedestrian safety along the busy corridor.

“This is to allow for constructions works of the Kihunguro footbridge column bases and stub columns at the section,” KeNHA added.

In the statement signed by Acting Director General Eng. Luka Kimeli, KeNHA advised motorists to cooperate with traffic marshals and police officers who will be stationed at the site to guide movement throughout the construction period.

“KeNHA advises motorists to follow the proposed traffic management plan and cooperate with the police and traffic marshals on site,” the Authority said.

Traffic management plan

A detailed traffic management map released by KeNHA shows how traffic will be redirected during the two-month construction period.

For motorists heading towards Nairobi, traffic approaching Kihunguro will be diverted off the affected service lane before the construction area.

Vehicles will then merge temporarily onto the main Thika Superhighway carriageway to bypass the work zone before rejoining the service lane after the construction point.

Directional arrows and hoarding barriers have been placed along the route to ensure clarity and safety.

Similarly, for motorists heading towards Thika, vehicles will also be diverted from the service lane into a temporary bypass route that reconnects to the service lane past the construction section.

This diversion begins slightly before the working area, where signage and traffic marshals will help direct movement and manage merging traffic.

The map provided by KeNHA highlights two marked “WORKING AREAS” on either side of the highway, fenced off to create safe zones for construction workers.

The hoarded area will prevent pedestrian movement near the site, and designated crossing points will be available further along the highway.
