The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced a temporary closure of the Thika SUperhighway at the Kahawa Sukari drift due to floods.

The drift between Kahawa Barracks and Kenyatta University has been closed for Thika Bound traffic.

“The Kenya National Highways Authority would like to inform the public of a temporary closure of the Thika Superhighway, at the Kahawa Sukari drift between Kahawa Barracks and Kenyatta University, for Thika Bound traffic,” KeNHA stated.

The road has been closed following flooding of the drift due to an overnight heavy downpour.

“The Authority cautions road users against any attempts to use this section of the road in the interest of their safety,” KeNHA added.

The authority has advised motorists heading to Thika to use Kiambu Road and turn off to the Northern Bypass to Ruiru and vice versa.

“We will continue to monitor the water levels and advise when the water subsides. The Authority remains committed to ensure seamless connectivity to facilitate safe passage of goods and services for economic prosperity,” KeNHA added.

KeNHA closes Athi River-Namanga Road

KeNHA has also announced the closure of the Athi River-Namanga Road (A2) at the Kimalat area.

“This follows flooding occasioned by overnight heavy downpours that led River Kimalat to burst its banks.
Alternative routes through earth roads are equally flooded,” the authority stated.

“The Authority cautions road users against any attempts to use these affected areas in the interest of their safety. We will continue to monitor the water levels and advise when the water subsides. The Authority remains committed to ensure seamless connectivity to facilitate safe passage of goods and services for economic prosperity.”

In a recent update, the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) has resorted to temporarily closing some of the roads affected by the overnight rains that rendered them flooded and risky to pass.

Among the affected routes are Enterprise Road, Eastern Bypass, and Thika Bypass.

KURA said efforts are underway to manage traffic flow and ensure the safety of motorists navigating the affected areas.

“Following the heavy rains experienced last night across the country, the following roads within Nairobi & Kiambu Counties have been heavily affected leading to partial closure. Enterprise road, Eastern bypass and Thika bypass. The traffic police and our technical team are on the ground to direct traffic and enhance the safety of Motorists. We shall keep you posted as the situation unfolds. Please drive safely and don’t attempt to cross flooded sections,” KURA said.
