The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has issued a public notice regarding the temporary closure of a significant roadway in the country’s eastern region.

In a statement on Saturday, May 11, 2024, KeNHA said the affected route, the Garsen-Witu-Lamu (A7) Road, has been shuttered due to flooding caused by the overflow of the nearby Tana River.

The Authority attributes the closure to heavy rainfall upstream, which has led to the swelling of the Tana River and subsequent inundation of fields bordering the roadway.

“The Kenya National Highways Authority regrets to inform the public of a temporary closure of Garsen-Witu-Lamu (A7) Road due to flooding of the road section between Idsowe (Tana River Bridge) and Gamba/Lamgo la Simba,” KeNHA said.

Adding that; “This follows the ongoing heavy downpours experience upstream that have resulted in the Tana River breaking its banks and consequently flooding of the fields along the road.”

The flooding has rendered the road section between Idsowe (Tana River Bridge) and Gamba/Lamgo la Simba impassable for the time being.

In light of safety concerns, the KeNHA strongly advises against any attempts by motorists to traverse this flooded stretch of road.

Priority is being placed on safeguarding the well-being of the public, emphasizing the paramount importance of ensuring road user safety.

While acknowledging the inconvenience posed by the closure, KeNHA urges patience from affected individuals and communities until water levels recede to safe levels.

The authority assures the public that it is closely monitoring the situation and will provide updates as conditions evolve.

“The Authority cautions road users against any attempts to use this section of the road in the interest of their safety. Members of the public are advised to be patient until the water levels recede. The safety of the public on our roads remains our utmost priority,” KeNHA said.

Efforts are underway to address the flooding and restore normal traffic flow on the Garsen-Witu-Lamu Road.

KeNHA remains committed to maintaining the integrity and safety of Kenya’s road network, prioritizing the welfare of all road users.
