Karua urges MPs to impeach Ruto

People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua has called on Members of Parliament to initiate impeachment proceedings against President William Ruto, accusing the current legislature of failing in its constitutional mandate.
Speaking during an interview on a local media station on July 8, 2025, Karua stated that Parliament had long ceased to function independently and is now largely beholden to the Executive.
“Parliament abandoned its role long ago. They are largely in the pocket of Dr William Ruto and his rogue regime. The Speaker is gone. He’s no longer Speaker of Parliament—he’s Speaker of William Ruto,” Karua charged.
Impeachment motion
Despite her harsh assessment of the legislature’s performance, Karua suggested that Parliament could “redeem itself” by initiating impeachment proceedings against Ruto.
“Parliament can actually redeem itself and even the few who speak for the people, because I have to admit there are a few voices who speak for the people, they can initiate impeachment,” she added.

Karua argued that an impeachment motion would serve an important purpose regardless of its outcome, as it would provide a platform to expose government actions to both domestic and international audiences.
“An impeachment motion, whether successful or not, offers a chance to ventilate, sensitise Kenyans and the world of what is going on,” she explained.
The former Justice Minister emphasised that Parliament must make independent decisions despite party pressure.
“The parliamentary group has to come to its own decisions, and this is one of the things, an impeachment motion,” she reiterated.
Addressing govt excesses
Beyond impeachment, Karua further argued that there were multiple avenues to seek justice and accountability for government excesses.
She referenced the Rome Statute, suggesting that proceedings could be initiated both at the International Criminal Court and through domestic legal mechanisms.
“According to the Rome Statute, proceedings can be initiated, not just at the Hague, but even here nationally. There are many ways,” she noted.

The PLP leader also called for accountability for security forces involved in violence against protesters, stating that “rogue police officers or security agents” could be brought before courts of law.
“There are many, a raft of things which can be done. We need to pull our energies and synergies together and break away into groups that can do things,” she said.
