Nominated Senator Karen Nyamu strongly condemned the impeachment motion brought before the Senate against Isiolo Governor Abdi Ibrahim Guyo, terming it a complete violation of constitutional procedure and terming the move by the MCAs a serious joke.

While contributing to the debate on the ongoing standoff on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, Nyamu expressed disbelief that the Isiolo County Assembly could submit an impeachment motion to the Senate without holding any official sitting to deliberate on the matter.

She emphasised that a formal sitting and debate at the county level are mandatory prerequisites for any impeachment process under the law.

“Mr Speaker, with all due respect, this is a joke and a dangerous one. Where does the team of the county assembly get the audacity to walk into this senate without a shred of evidence that a sitting of a county assembly ever took place?” Nyamu said.

Nyamu pointed out that there was no evidence provided by the County Assembly to support claims that any proceedings took place. There were no recordings, Hansard reports, or valid documentation indicating that the Assembly debated or passed any motion. She questioned how the motion was allowed to reach the Senate without the basic legislative steps being followed.

She went further to criticise the Isiolo MCAs for what she described as a blatant disregard for due process.

She noted that the Senate is a constitutional institution where facts and procedures matter, not an informal platform where unverified claims can be tabled without supporting evidence.

Without mincing her words, she told the MCAs that the Senate is not a WhatsApp group but a constitutional office where the rule of law is highly regarded.

”Mr Speaker, this is not a WhatsApp group; this is a constitutional institution. Where is the Hansard? Where is the attendance record? And I want to be very clear: there was no sitting, and therefore there was no sitting,” she stated.

The standoff

This comes after a standoff on the matter, with the defence team coming up with a raft of issues, pleading with the speaker to throw away the impeachment motion against the Isiolo governor.

This issue also made the speaker suspend the house sitting for 30 minutes for them to deliberate the weight of demands brought forth by the defence team.
