The governor’s statement came hours after six members of the same family died when their vehicle plunged into the Kiama River along the Chomo–Kahunyo road on Saturday night.

The victims were returning home from a dowry ceremony in Kiambu when their vehicle lost control and sank into the river.

According to police and witnesses, the tragic accident occurred at Wacengu Bridge in Kariara Ward, Gatanga Constituency.

The victims, a husband and wife among them, were part of an extended family returning from a traditional wedding celebration in the Nazareth area of Kiambu County.

6 members die in a road accident

Rescue teams retrieved six bodies from the submerged vehicle early Sunday morning. Six other passengers who survived the crash were rushed to Murang’a Level 5 Hospital and Kirwara Level 4 Hospital for treatment.

Murang’a Senator Joe Nyutu also mourned the victims, calling the incident a heartbreaking tragedy that had robbed the community of loved ones who had been celebrating a day of joy just hours before their deaths.

“My heart is heavy this afternoon. We mourn with the people of Gatanga, Kariara Ward, following the tragic road accident at Wacengu Bridge that claimed six precious lives last night,” Nyutu said.

Authorities have since launched investigations to determine the cause of the accident, with early reports pointing to loss of control and possible speeding.

Police have cautioned motorists to be extra vigilant, especially along narrow and poorly lit rural roads.

The accident adds to a worrying rise in road fatalities across the country.

According to police data, at least 23 people have died in separate incidents since Saturday, including pedestrians, riders, and passengers.

Governor Kang’ata has called on Murang’a residents to support the bereaved family and to continue praying for the quick recovery of the survivors.

He also urged all road users to exercise caution and obey traffic rules to prevent further loss of lives.

“It is a dark moment for Murang’a, but we will stand together with the family. As a county, we are committed to supporting them through this difficult time,” Kang’ata said.

The bodies of the victims have been moved to the Murang’a Level 5 Hospital mortuary as police continue investigations into the accident.
