Lawyer and political strategist Saitabao Ole Kanchory has issued a stern warning to Kenyans, cautioning that the current trajectory of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) could pose a serious threat to the integrity of the 2027 General Election.

In a hard-hitting statement issued via his official X account on the night of Thursday, July 10, 2025, following the regazettement of IEBC commissioners by President William Ruto, Kanchory questioned the legitimacy of the process and accused the electoral body of historically determining presidential outcomes in place of voters.

“If the IEBC illegally selected by bread based is what we will go to 2027 with, then we really must up the level of our vigilance,” he stated.

Previous elections

The former Raila Odinga’s agent in the 2022 general elections went ahead to point out what he termed the commission’s controversial role in previous elections.

“IEBC (not Kenyans) has determined every presidential election since 2007. Let’s be on HIGH ALERT. Nimewawuon,” Ole Kanchory wrote on X.

IEBC commissioners gazetted

His remarks come moments after Ruto gazetted the new IEBC chairperson, Erastus Ethekon, and six commissioners.

The gazette came after the High Court upheld the nomination of the seven commissioners, after a three-judge bench led by Justices Roselyne Aburili, John Chigiti, and Bahati Mwamuye dismissed a petition challenging the nomination of the commissioners.

“In exercise of the powers conferred by Article 250 (2) as read with section 5 (2) of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission Act and Paragraph 4 of the First Schedule to the Act, I, William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces, appoint Erastus Edung Ethekon to be the Chairperson of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission for a period of six (6) years,” Ruto stated.

Ethekon will lead a team of six, including Ann Njeri Nderitu, Moses Alutalala Mukhwana, Mary Karen Sorobit, Hassan Noor Hassan, Francis Odhiambo Aduol, and Fahima Araphat Abdallah.
