Kaluma mocks Karua’s past election losses after her bold anti-Ruto remarks

Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma has launched a sharp attack on Martha Karua following her recent remarks that President William Ruto cannot win in 2027, regardless of who leads the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission.
Karua, the leader of the PLP party, had confidently stated that even if Ruto himself chaired the commission alongside his family members as commissioners, Kenyans would still vote him out because the majority want him gone.
“I do not exactly have confidence in IEBC, but let it be. Even if Ruto took over as chair and members of his family became the commissioners, we would still defeat him. This time he cannot win because a majority of Kenyans want him out,” Karua had previously stated.

Responding to this declaration in a post on X on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, Kaluma mocked Karua’s track record in past elections, questioning where she would get the votes to defeat President Ruto.
He pointed out that Karua failed to secure votes in her own polling station both in 2017 when she contested against Governor Anne Waiguru and in 2022 when she ran as Raila Odinga’s running mate.
According to Kaluma, these repeated defeats expose her political weaknesses, making her current statements appear misplaced.
“You got zero votes from your home polling station against Governor Waiguru in 2017. You again got zero votes from your home polling station as Baba’s running mate in 2022. From where will you get these votes to defeat President Ruto, big sister?”
Raila’s running mate
Earlier on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, the Homa Bay Town Member of Parliament had similarly taken a swipe at Karua, questioning how the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party leader settled on People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua in the 2022 general elections.
In the elections, the Kenya Kwanza government led by President William Ruto won 50.5 per cent of the votes against the Azimio la Umoja coalition, which garnered 48.8 per cent.
In a statement on X, Kaluma stated that Karua did not bring tangible votes from her polling station.
“I don’t understand how Baba chose her as his running mate in 2022! She returned zero votes—even from her own polling station!” he stated.
His remarks came days after Karua officially declared her intention to run for the presidency in the 2027 general election.
