People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua has broken her silence following President William Ruto’s hardline remarks on ongoing demonstrations, firmly warning him against issuing threats to the public and opposition figures.

Taking to her X account on Thursday, July 10, 2025, Karua responded with a sharp rebuke directed at the Head of State.

She questioned whether the president was fully aware of the weight of his own words and directly tagged him in her message, asserting that it was time he put an end to his habitual tendency of issuing threats to the public.

“Hear yourself @WilliamsRuto na uwache kututisha,” she posted, which translates to “Hear yourself and stop threatening us.”

Karua’s response comes just hours after President Ruto, while addressing the nation from Kilimani on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, issued a hardline declaration against those he accused of turning peaceful protests into violent uprisings.

In his strongly worded speech, Ruto warned that any attack on police officers or law enforcement installations would be treated as an act of war against the country.

The president said that anyone found burning property, attacking officers, or storming police stations should be shot in the leg, taken to hospital, and then prosecuted in court.

He described such actions as an attempt to plunge Kenya into lawlessness and vowed to crush what he called the “war of destroying property and businesses.”

“Anyone who picks up petrol to burn someone else’s business or any other person’s property—such a person should be shot in the leg, taken to hospital, and then presented in court,” the president declared.

“Anyone who attacks a police officer, anyone who invades a police station—that is a declaration of war in the Republic of Kenya. I do not know if we are understanding each other, my friend. Enough is enough. It cannot go on any longer,” Ruto further warned.

The president asserted that his government will do everything necessary—within the bounds of the law—to restore order and prevent what he described as organised chaos aimed at destabilising the nation.

“I will protect the properties of the citizens of Kenya, their lives, and their businesses. It is the responsibility of the Government of Kenya, which I lead, to make sure that this war of destroying property and burning people’s businesses comes to an end. It must stop. We are going to use whatever means are available to make sure that we stabilise the country. We cannot accept mayhem and anarchy to destroy the development we have in this country.”
