Kaluma hits back at Karua over conditions to work with Raila

Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma has hit back at Martha Karua after the People Liberation Party (PLP) leader laid down the conditions of renewing association with Orange Democratic Movement leader Raila Odinga.
In a statement via his X page on Friday, July 25, 2025, Kaluma dismissed the demands, challenging Karua to first end his association with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
According to Kaluma, the prospect of the ODM leader working with her remains untenable unless Karua dumps the former DP.
“We will NEVER work with Martha Karua unless she severs ties with impeached Gachagua. Gachagua hates our people.” Kaluma’s statement on X read.
Karua’s conditions
Kaluma’s sentiment comes after Karua opened up that she was willing to work with the veteran ODM leader if he severed ties with President William Ruto.

Karua also added that Raila should be the one to return the favours and support her after she supported his bid for presidency in 2022 under the Baba na Mama Team.
The five-month association between ODM and the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has continued to endure many hurdles and storms as the days to the 2027 election near.
Speculations over the political pact recently got its most fierce test yet, after Orange Democratic Secretary General Edwin Sifuna railed on Ruto’s government and ODM’s association with the ruling party during a recent interview.
The tell-all interview elicited a sharp outburst from ODM MPs, led by Kaluma and his Uriri counterpart, Mark Nyamita, who came out to denounce the Nairobi Senator.
Kaluma, a staunch proponent of the deal, stated the pact remained intact and on course for implementation, despite the divisive statement from the party official.
The MOU was between ODM and UDA, and that’s why I am telling you it will not die because of what Sifuna says. In terms of the NADCO report, a number of pieces of legislation were proposed, and I can tell you that as late as the day before yesterday, we were discussing those that are related to electoral reforms, the one related to political party changes that were to be made in the office of the registrar of political parties, and others around governance. So NADCO is a tick,” Kaluma said.
