Kalonzo slams Ruto’s regime for misusing church pulpits

Wiper Patriotic Front Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has criticised President William Ruto’s administration in what he termed as the misuse of the church to sanitise corruption and poor governance.
In an X post on Sunday, September 21, 2025, Kalonzo accused the government of turning religious organisations into political grounds to mask failure in leadership.
“The church should be a place of truth and hope. Yet far too often, the Ruto regime dishonours this sacred pulpit in their attempt to cleanse their corruption and mismanagement of our country’s internal and external affairs,” the post read in part.
His remarks come amid growing public concern over the frequent use of church events by political leaders to make policy pronouncements or launch personal attacks, a trend many religious leaders have also criticised in recent months.

The Wiper leader had earlier urged Ruto to stop attacks on churches that expose corruption in his government.
The Wiper boss emphasised that the people of Kenya deserve more integrity from those in power.
“The faithful deserve better. Kenyans deserve better,” Kalonzo declared.
Kalonzo called for a return to the core values embedded in the national prayer.
“Our country needs leaders who understand our national prayer, that in common bond united, we will dwell in unity, peace and liberty, and that the fruit of all our labour will fill all our hearts with thanksgiving,” the statement read.

Ruto’s firm stance on State House Church
Kalonzo’s utterances also come as Ruto reaffirms his commitment to construct a church in the State House despite the backlash from the opposition leaders and the rights group.
He dismissed reports that a planned church at State House will cost taxpayers Ksh 1.2 billion, clarifying that the project will be privately funded and at a much lower cost.
Ruto has also promised to establish more places of worship, even as his critics continue with their own onslaught, including petitioning him over his church plan.
Speaking on Sunday, September 14, 2025, during a service at the State House Chapel, Ruto reiterated his commitment to enhancing worship facilities for those within the State House compound.
“Here at State House, God will bless us to get a better place for worship. We will not have some people worshipping from outside since we will have a bigger place,” he said.
“I am confident that God will make provisions for us to have a place where we can worship Him in this compound.”
It is worth noting that the head of state had earlier dismissed reports that the planned church would cost taxpayers Ksh1.2 billion, clarifying that the project will be privately funded and at a much lower cost.
