Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has yet again weighed on the ongoing debate of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s impeachment motion.

Speaking during a live interview with a local TV station, the self-proclaimed Azimio la Umoja leader said that as a coalition they think that the entire process of Gachagua’s impeachment is a diversionary tactic.

“Azimio issued a statement yesterday and made it clear to the country that we think the entire process of impeachment of the Deputy President is a diversionary tactic,” he said.

Additionally, Kalonzo questioned the capability of the national assembly to contact a historical impeachment process yet the Gen-Z literally impeached it after they invaded parliament during the anti-government demonstrations on June 25, 2024.

While quoting Article 1 of the 2010 Constitution, the former vice president stated that the supreme power belongs to the people and it can be exercised directly or indirectly through the elected representative or directly like the way the anti-government demonstrators did when they invaded parliament.

“The country will remember what happened on June 25, 2024, when parliament was literally impeached so it is the same parliament which is now undertaking this very crucial matter and the question we ask ourselves. I senior council ask myself a parliament that is impeached by the people under article one of the constitution where supreme power belongs to the people and the people exercise it because it says I can exercise it directly or indirectly through the elected representative or directly like the way they did,” Kalonzo stated.

Gachagua’s impeachment

Gachagua is set to face the Senators after the High Court declined to grant him conservatory orders against his impeachment hearings at the Senate.

In a ruling on Tuesday, October 15, Justice Chacha Mwita ruled that the prayers by Gachagua’s legal team would not be granted, but added that some of the issues raised were of considerable concern.

“In considering the application and the argument by parties, the prayer for grant of conservatory order is declined,” Justice Mwita ruled.

Gachagua had filed 26 court cases challenging the legality and process of his ouster from office by impeachment.

The DP was impeached by 282 members of the National Assembly before his case was referred to the Senate.

The MPs, who originated the impeachment motion, levelled 11 charges against Gachagua including gross misconduct, gross violation of the constitution and any other law and suspicious accumulation of wealth.

The deputy president, has, however, maintained his innocence against all the charges against him, stating that the impeachment was politically driven.
