Kalonzo and Gachagua’s opposition team kicks off Makueni and Mombasa tours

The United Opposition team led by Wiper Democratic Movement party leader Kalonzo Musyoka and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua will on Friday, June 6, 2025, embark on a campaign tour of Makueni and Mombasa counties.
Kalonzo, in a statement shared via his official social media accounts on the night of Thursday, June 5, 2025, said that the tour dubbed the whistle-stop tour will kick off at 10:00 am.
The two-day tour will see the opposition team interact with residents of Malili, Sultan Hamud, Emali, Makindu Town, Kibwezi, and Kinyambu-Kambu/Machinery in Makueni County on Friday, June 6, and Voi town, Maungu/Taru, Mazeras, Mariakani, and Kisauni in Mombasa County on Saturday, June 7, 2025.
“Tomorrow, beginning at 10:00AM, my colleagues in The United Opposition and I will visit with residents of Malili, Sultan Hamud, Emali, Makindu Town, Kibwezi, and Kinyambu-Kambu/Machinery. Together, as One Nation, One People, we will #KomboaKenya,” Kalonzo stated.
Event lineup
Kalonzo shared the event’s lineup that includes former Agriculture Cabinet Secretary in the former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration Peter Munya, Saitoti Muturi, former Public Service CS Justin Muturi, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, People’s Liberation Party (PLP) party leader Martha Karua, Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) party leader Eugene Wamalwa, Mukhisa Kituyi, and Mithika Linturi, who was fired as an Agriculture CS in President William Ruto’s administration.
The Friday tour will be the first time Gachagua visits the Kibwezi West constituency, which is represented in the National Assembly by Mwengi Mutuse, the man who tabled the motion that ultimately led to his removal from office, ending his tenure as the country’s second in command.
Pushback against Ruto
The tour by Gachagua and Kalonzo is viewed as part of a growing pushback against President William Ruto.
The Kibwezi West visit comes just days after Kalonzo hosted a group of key opposition figures—including Gachagua—at his Tseikuru residence in Kitui County on May 29, 2025.
The high-profile gathering, the first of its kind at Kalonzo’s rural home in years, marked the beginning of an intense battle for the Ukambani vote ahead of the 2027 general election.
This comes as opposition leaders face mounting pressure to consolidate their political base to strengthen their bargaining power in ongoing negotiations over who will fly the coalition’s presidential flag.
Gachagua and Kalonzo have since emerged as central figures in a growing coalition of opposition leaders.
