Justina Wamae calls for reforms in public transport after passenger dies in fare dispute
Former Roots Party presidential running mate Justina Wamae has called for immediate reforms in Kenya’s public transport sector following a tragic incident where a passenger lost their life in a Super Metro matatu after a dispute over fare.
Expressing her concerns on the social media platform X on Thursday, March 13, 2025, Wamae emphasized the urgent need for a well-structured, professional, and properly regulated transport system. She criticized the current state of public transport, pointing out that the lack of oversight continues to put passengers at risk.
“Super metro… a clear indicator why we should have a functional, professional and regulated public transport system. Lakini mlisema masomo ni ujinga!” she stated.
Super Metro speaks
In a statement on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, Super Metro expressed regret and sorrow over the incident. The company extended condolences to the victim’s family and assured the public that they take passenger safety seriously. As an immediate step, Super Metro suspended the crew of the bus involved pending further investigation.
“We are deeply saddened by the tragic incident involving one of the buses operating under our company’s name. Our thoughts and condolences go out to the victim’s family and loved ones during this difficult time,” Super Metro stated.
Adding;
“While the matter is under investigation, we want to assure everyone that we take safety very seriously. We do not condone reckless behaviour, and as a precautionary measure, the crew involved in this incident has been suspended pending further investigation. We will fully cooperate with authorities to ensure justice is served.”
