Opposition leader Raila Odinga has denied a report by the Sunday Nation revealing that he held a meeting with impeached Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru in a bid to save her political career.

“No such meeting with Ms. Waiguru or the other governors, James Nyoro of Kiambu and Mutahi Kahiga of Nyeri took place as reported in the Sunday Nation,” said Raila, who is the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader.

Since his political truce with President Uhuru Kenyatta on March 9, 2018, the ODM leader has been working closely with the government on national matters.

Recently, he has held meetings with leaders who were previously allied to the Deputy President William Ruto in the Jubilee faction, Tanga Tanga, that has been vocal about the DP’s 2022 presidential ambitions.

On Sunday, June 14, Raila also denied the existence of a Senate committee formed to investigate Governor Waiguru.

“I also wish to make it clear that there does not exist any Senate Committee to investigate Governor Waiguru and whose members from ODM I have instructed to save the governor as reported in the Sunday Nation,” said Raila.

But the ODM leader did admit that he held a meeting with the Laikipia Women Representative Catherine Waruguru in the company of other MPs on the time and day he is purported to have met with Ms. Waiguru and the two other governors.

“The meeting had nothing to do with the tribulations of Governor Waiguru,” said Raila.

Waiguru is battling to save her job after Kirinyaga County ward representatives impeached her on June 9, over alleged abuse of power charges.

The governor was in the same week dealt another blow by the High Court which ruled that the MCAs had not violated a court order when they impeached her.

Now her fate lies with senators with Speaker Kenneth Lusaka have confirmed receipt of the MCAs impeachment resolution.

According to the People Daily, the Senate House Business Committee has proposed an 11-member committee to probe the charges leveled against Ms. Waiguru.

The Senate Majority Whip Senator Irungu Kang’ata said the plenary will make the final decision on whether to go the plenary route or the 11-member team.

Jubilee Party has proposed Senators Gideon Moi (Baringo) , Anwar Oletitip (Lamu), Johnson Sakaja (Nairobi) and nominated Senators Beth Mugo and Arbshiro Halakhe.

NASA has proposed Minority Whip and Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala, Moses Kajwang’ (Homabay), Enock Wambua (Kitui) and nominated senators Judith Pareno and Beatrice Kwamboka.
