Lynn Ngugi questions standards in public institutions after Karen Nyamu’s remarks

Award-winning media personality Lynn Ngugi has called for tough action and accountability following Senator Karen Nyamu’s remarks made during a visit by students to the Senate.

Lynn said the incident involving a student inside the Senate was inappropriate and raised concerns about leadership and conduct in public office.

She said on Saturday, May 9, 2026, the matter should not be dismissed as normal behaviour from Karen Nyamu. Lynn explained that children should be protected at all times, especially in national institutions where leaders are expected to act responsibly.

“What happened to that student in the Senate was deeply inappropriate and honestly very uncomfortable to watch,” Lynn Ngugi said.

“A child walked into a national institution under a school program and somehow ended up being spoken about suggestively by an adult holding public office,” she added.

Lynn said the incident had exposed a bigger problem with the standards being accepted in leadership positions. She questioned the process used to nominate leaders to the Senate and the qualities being rewarded.

Calls for accountability

“And no, we will not reduce this to ‘Karen just being Karen..’ Certain lines should never be crossed, especially when children are involved!!” Lynn Ngugi said.

She explained that an apology alone could not solve the issue because public leaders must be held accountable for their actions. According to Lynn, the incident had damaged the image of a respected national institution.

“And honestly, this entire situation raises very serious questions about how Karen Nyamu even ended up in the Senate in the first place,” she said.

“Who nominates these people? What exactly is the criteria? What values are being rewarded?” Lynn Ngugi added.

Lynn also questioned the type of conduct that qualifies someone to represent Kenyans in Parliament. She said the incident reflected a deeper problem in the country if such behaviour was being normalised in public institutions.

“What kind of conduct qualifies someone to represent Kenyans at that level?” she asked.

“Because if this is the standard being normalised in our public institutions, then we genuinely have a deeper crisis as a country,” Lynn Ngugi said.

She insisted that stronger action must be taken against Karen Nyamu and maintained that remaining in office should not be an option after the incident.

“An apology alone is not enough. There must be accountability,” Lynn Ngugi said.
