Handshake coming? Ruto hosts Gideon Moi at State House
Former Baringo Senator and KANU party leader Gideon Moi held a meeting with President William Ruto on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, at State House.
The meeting was confirmed through photos and footage released by State House on Thursday, October 9, showing Gideon and the President sharing a light moment as they walked towards the meeting area.
A group of other leaders from Baringo County also joined the two during the discussions.
The timing of the meeting raised questions, as thousands of KANU supporters had gathered at Kabarnet Airstrip earlier on Thursday, waiting to accompany Moi to the IEBC offices for clearance to contest in the upcoming Baringo senatorial by-election.
Many of the supporters were left disappointed when he did not appear at the nomination offices between 11:00 am and 2:00 pm, a development that left them frustrated and forced them to return home on foot.
Speculation over Moi’s political intentions
Moi’s visit to State House has sparked sharp reactions across the country, with many Kenyans wondering about his next political move.
This comes just days after he officially announced his entry into the race to succeed the late Baringo Senator William Cheptumo, who passed away while still serving in office.
Before the meeting, Gideon had already started his campaigns, with a truck branded in his image and KANU party colours, and had donated Ksh2.5 million through Gladwell Cheruiyot to support his campaign activities.
Historically, Gideon and President Ruto have had a tense relationship politically, often clashing over the Rift Valley leadership. Their rivalry dates back years, including a notable incident where the former senator blocked the president from visiting his late father, former President Daniel Arap Moi.
The meeting at State House, therefore, is seen as significant given this history of disagreements. Tiaty Member of Parliament William Kamket, who was previously a close ally of Gideon and held senior positions within KANU before joining Kenya Kwanza, recently stated that voters in Baringo would only support a UDA candidate, signalling potential challenges for Gideon in the by-election.
As speculation continues, Kenyans are closely watching Moi’s next steps, with many anticipating the official announcement about his position in the race for the Baringo senatorial seat.
