Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir has outlined why he believes President William Ruto will retain the presidency in 2027, citing unity, inclusivity, and political outreach as decisive factors.

Speaking on Saturday, August 10, 2025 during an event in Mombasa, the ODM  Deputy Party Leader, said the Head of State’s deliberate efforts to bring together diverse communities at the Coast have strengthened his support base.

Uwezo wa kuwashinda tunazo,” Nassir declared, noting that in the past, some coastal residents were denied identification documents and told “si wa huku,” but President Ruto changed that. “Lakini Rais Ruto akatupea ID hii ni sababu ya kwanza,” he said.

From division to inclusion

The governor recounted how the Coast region was previously divided, with many refusing to recognise Ruto’s leadership.

Tulikuwa tumesema sisi hatutambui William Ruto, lakini akatunyoshea mkono mimi na Joho,” he remarked, adding that Mombasa is home to people from all ethnic groups, which makes unity a powerful electoral advantage.

He argued that by 2027, the opposition will be struggling with “numbers that don’t add up,” leading them to resort to propaganda and divisive politics. “Hao majamaa wanajua hawataweza kushinda, sasa watakuja na lugha ya propaganda, uongo, na lugha ya kutugawanya,” Nassir warned.

Support for victims’ compensation

Nassir also voiced his backing for the government’s framework to compensate victims of past protests, saying it was a step toward reconciliation and justice. The governor stressed that unity in governance should extend to addressing historical injustices.

In a separate message, Nassir urged former deputy President Rigathi Gachagua to abandon the “cousin narrative”, terming it as an aim to mislead coastal residents. “He is trying to deceive us, but we are united,” Nassir said firmly.

The Mombasa governor’s remarks signal a strong show of confidence in President Ruto’s re-election prospects, underpinned by political bridges built across party lines and communities.
