Former nominated senator Gloria Orwoba is once again in the headlines after she was taken into custody following a scuffle at the Senate.

She is currently being held at Central Police Station in Nairobi.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, Orwoba told her followers that she is waiting to be charged, but the process has stalled.

She explained that the officers at Central informed her they could not move forward because the individual who initiated her arrest had not appeared to record the charges at Parliament Police Station. She described the situation as a political attempt to frustrate her and discredit her fight.

Orwoba said her struggle has nothing to do with salaries or privileges, insisting that she is exposing corruption and misuse of power within the Senate. She accused the Speaker’s office, the Clerk, and their close allies of running a system steeped in impunity. She promised not to be silenced, adding that she is shameless and will not be intimidated into backing down.

“I have been detained in Central Police Station. I am awaiting my charges, which are apparently being booked at Parliament Police Station. The central police bosses say that they cannot charge me because the individual who triggered the arrest is not here, and they are the ones to charge me.” Orwoba said.

Adding;

“I want to assure those doubting my intentions and my reasons for fighting. This is not about a salary or a position, trust me. By the time this fight comes to an end, the outright corruption and impunity will be laid bare for EVERYONE to see.”

Drama in Senate

Her arrest came after an earlier dramatic confrontation at Parliament. Denied entry into the Senate chambers, Orwoba parked her car across the gate, blocking other vehicles from passing. Security officers tried to tow it away, but she resisted. The standoff ended when three female police officers forcibly removed her from the scene, drawing a large crowd of onlookers.

Orwoba has insisted that she had every right to access the Senate. She arrived with official documents, including court orders reinstating her as a nominated senator, but was still turned away by security. In defiance, she challenged them to arrest her, saying she had simply come back to do her job.

Her troubles with UDA began earlier this year when the party expelled her on claims of misconduct. The move triggered a series of legal battles, with the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission gazetting Consolata Nabwire Wakwabubi as her replacement. But Orwoba successfully challenged the expulsion in court. Judges issued conservatory orders halting her removal, and the Political Parties Tribunal later ruled that her expulsion was unlawful.

Despite the court rulings, the Senate went ahead with swearing in her replacement, a move she has termed unconstitutional and politically motivated. Speaking in recent interviews, Orwoba has claimed that her biggest mistake was refusing to keep quiet about corruption. She said her fight is against a system that rewards sycophancy and punishes truth-telling.
