Gitonga Mukunji sends message to Embu residents from Kahawa Law Courts

Manyatta Member of Parliament (MP) Gitonga Mukunji has urged residents of Embu to remain calm and uphold peace, even as demonstrations erupted earlier in the morning across the county with youth and locals demanding his immediate release.

Speaking from the confines of the Kahawa Law Courts on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, the youthful legislator assured his constituents that he was safe and unshaken and dismissed the charges facing him as baseless and politically motivated.

“Embu people, calm down. Please calm down. I am in court. Of course, the charges I have will not carry any weight. We are alive and well, and our detractors will not win,” he said in a video message shared shortly after his court appearance.

Mukunji, who was visibly composed, expressed concern over the destruction witnessed during the morning protests and pleaded with his supporters not to engage in acts that could lead to more harm.

“I will tell our young people and my Embu people, do not destroy businesses, do not lose lives. I am safe and sound, and I will not be cowed. I will continue defending my people of Embu,” he said.

He further cautioned organisers of rogue groups taking advantage of the demonstrations to loot and damage property, urging them not to taint the true spirit of public protest.

“But please, the destruction of property and the loss of lives are not something that we would like to condone. Even if we are demonstrating, let us do it peacefully. Let the people who are organising goons not destroy the good name of demonstrations—at least get some conscience,” he pleaded.

Mukunji wrapped up his message with a heartfelt appeal, saying, “Please, please, let us not lose more lives. Let us be calm now. I am in court.”

Mukunji’s arrest

The National Police Service (NPS) officially confirmed the arrest of the outspoken Member of Parliament on Monday, July 7, 2025.

In a statement, the NPS listed the MP among individuals apprehended during the Sabasaba protests.

According to the NPS, Mukunji was arrested alongside several others in connection with acts of lawlessness reported during the demonstrations. The police indicated that those arrested will be subjected to investigations in line with the law.

“Additionally, a number of suspects have been arrested, including Hon. Gitonga Mukunji, MP for Manyatta Constituency,” NPS said.

The NPS further provided an update on the Saba Saba protests, acknowledging that while the majority of Kenyans conducted themselves peacefully, a number of individuals engaged in criminal acts.

These included attacks on law enforcement officers, looting, and destruction of property.

“The National Police Service (NPS) wishes to update the public following today’s protests, dubbed ‘Saba Saba’. NPS commends the majority of Kenyans for being law-abiding and heeding the call to maintain law and order.” They added.
