Gatundu North Member of Parliament Elijah Njoroge Kururia has firmly ruled out joining former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s newly launched political party, the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), outlining four reasons for his decision.

Speaking on K24 TV on the morning of Friday, May 16, 2025, Kururia was candid in his criticism, stating that Gachagua lacks direction and clarity of purpose — qualities he considers essential in any political leader.

I can join DCP if Rigathi is not the party leader because Rigathi doesn’t calculate. He just talks, he just acts without knowing where he is heading,” Kururia said.

Kururia, who was elected as an independent and has since aligned himself with President William Ruto’s administration, went on to express uncertainty about Gachagua’s own political ambitions.

I cannot follow a person or a party leader who is not vying to be president, because where are you talking me? You are getting me out of Ruto’s camp — Ruto is a president, Ruto is vying — then I go to a person who is not vying. I cannot join Rigathi so that Rigathi can now tell me who will be president again. If it is Kalonzo, if it is Matiang’i, if it is any other person I better go to them directly,” he added.

His third reason focused on the size and political weight of Gachagua’s new outfit, which he dismissed as insignificant.

These small small parties you see — DCP, DNA — those are just small things. The same way they are talking today, that’s how Wajackoyah was talking, that’s how Raila was talking and they were defeated by William Ruto,” he said.

Kururia’s final concern was the lack of a contingency plan within the opposition, should Ruto secure a second term in 2027.

I do not know what they will do or what their reaction will be if Ruto comes back again in 2028 because there is a notion with them that he is not coming back. I don’t know how they are doing their calculations,” he said.

DCP

Gachagua launched the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) in a colourful ceremony at the party’s newly inaugurated headquarters on Musa Gitau Road in Nairobi’s Lavington suburb on Thursday, May 15, 2025.

The Thursday launch marks Gachagua’s boldest step yet toward reclaiming political relevance and laying the groundwork for a presidential bid in the 2027 general election.

The new party, splashed in vibrant neon green, earthy brown, and crisp white, touts the slogan ‘Skiza Wakenya’ – a Swahili phrase meaning ‘Listen to Kenyans’. Its logo, an illustrated ear cupped by fingers, drives home the message: a party that hears the people.

Speaking at the event, Gachagua stressed that his new political outfit would not dish out direct nominations as has been the case with other major political parties in the country.

“Let me clarify for the avoidance of doubt. This party has no favourite candidate. This party has no provision for direct nomination. This party believes in ‘let the people decide’,” Gachagua said.

Flanked by a coterie of loyalists and former political heavyweights, Gachagua struck a populist tone while warning his closest allies that loyalty alone would not be a ticket to power within DCP.

“I have many leaders who have stood with me in very difficult times, who have walked with me in my journey. But I want to confirm close as they are to me, much as they have stood with me, none of them is entitled to a direct nomination. So I want to encourage everybody to be prepared to face each other in the party primaries,” Gachagua said.
