Garissa Senator Yusuf Haji is dead

Garissa Senator Yusuf Haji has died at the Aga Khan Hospital where he was receiving treatment, his family says.

Haji, who was also the chairperson of the Building Bridges Initiative task force, died on Monday morning, February 15.

He was 80 years old.

The bulk of Haji’s career was in the public service having joined provincial administration in the early 1960s as a District Officer.

He rose through the ranks to the position of provincial commissioner in which he served between 1970 and 1997.

He joined politics in 1998 when he was nominated to Parliament and was later elected unopposed in 2002 and 2007 as Ijara MP.

The two-term Garissa senator also served in the Cabinet as an Assistant Minister in the Office of the President between 1998 and 2001 in the late president Daniel Moi’s government.

He served as a Minister of State for Defence after the 2007 General Election.
