Gakuya asks Raila to choose Kenyans over Ruto ahead of MoU review
Embakasi North Member of Parliament James Gakuya has beseeched Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga to consider choosing the country over supporting a single individual in President William Ruto to succeed.
Gakuya made the remarks during a live TV interview on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, while commenting on the status of the country’s political landscape.
In his assertion, Gakuya opined that Raila is the man holding the government and Ruto’s regime together, stating everything will come tumbling down if he shifts his stance.
“Raila is the single pillar supporting this regime. Without him this regime is a gone regime. I wish Raila would consider rallying behind the public of Kenya and support them rather than a single individual to survive. The regime is not benefitting the people of Kenya but individuals,” he stated.
He also commented on the future of Kenyan politics, predicting that pretty much will remain as it is as the nation heads to the 2027 polls.
“The politics will change very little, very little. The prevailing spirit will remain. If this regime is going to rebuild, I don’t think it can only do very little. I think it is Raila who is supporting this regime,” he stated.
Gakuya’s statement comes days after Raila announced that ODM will review the 10-point memorandum of understanding signed with the United Democratic Alliance that conceived the broad-based government.

“ODM is a democratic party, and therefore ODM must tolerate divergent views within our party. But when we have talked and there is a consensus, then that must be the party stand. Kwa hivo mimi nasema tuko na wenzetu, tumekuwa nao na muktaba, tutareview tuone yale ambayo yametimizwa na yale ambayo hayajatimizwa, alafu tuseme msimamo na mwelekeo wetu kama chama,” Raila said during a delegates conference in Kakamega.
His weaning support
His remarks drew a sharp rebuke from Dagoretti North MP Beatrice Elachi, who warned against perpetuating divisive politics.
Gakuya further commented on the loyalty the ODM leader enjoys, stating that he would be proud to have such a huge following and support.
According to him, Raila enjoys an insane backing of supporters who can brave hunger and tarmac on the road to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport just to welcome him.
“If I had that kind of support, I would be a lucky man,” he said.
“It is only in that region where a master can decide what he wants, and everyone goes mute. Whether they are eating or not, if Raila is comfortable, they are all comfortable,” Gakuya said.
