Mwezi wa Baba: Jalang’o unveils massive month-long memorial plan for Raila Odinga

Lang’ata MP Phelix Odiwuor, popularly known as Jalang’o, has unveiled details of a month-long programme to honour the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
Jalang’o said October will be dedicated to celebrating and remembering Raila, with several activities planned across the country.
Speaking in a video posted on social media on Friday, September 18, 2026, Jalang’o referred to the programme as “Mwezi wa Baba”, saying it will feature a series of events culminating in a major gathering in Nairobi.
“Mwezi wa Baba will be the whole month of October,” Jalang’o said.
He announced that the first major event will be a candle-lighting ceremony scheduled for October 2 at Uhuru Park.
“The first major event being the candle lighting on the 2nd that will happen at Uhuru Park,” he said.
Jalang’o said the commemorations will culminate in a major rally at Jacaranda on October 31.
“Then the main rally will be on the 31st of October at Jacaranda – yes Jacaranda and it will be massive, it will be big, it will be Baba’s fans, Baba’s lovers,” he said.
He invited people who wish to participate in the commemoration to attend the October 31 event.
“Everyone who wants to celebrate with us on that day is welcomed,” Jalang’o added.
The announcement comes after the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) announced a month-long programme dubbed “Mwezi wa Baba” to mark one year since Raila’s death.
The party’s programme includes a nationwide candle-lighting ceremony on October 2, memorial activities in several counties and a final Nairobi rally on October 31.
Raila died on October 15, 2025, in India, aged 80. The former Prime Minister and ODM founder was buried at Kang’o Ka Jaramogi in Bondo, Siaya County.
The October commemorations will coincide with the first anniversary of his death, with ODM saying the activities are intended to honour Raila’s contribution to Kenya’s democracy and Pan-Africanism.
The Raila Odinga family is also organising a separate week-long national programme from October 10 to 17, coordinated by a National Steering Committee chaired by Prof Adams Oloo.
The family has said the broader anniversary commemorations will bring together Kenyans from different political, religious and social backgrounds.
