Nyandarua Senator John Methu, a close ally of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, has blasted Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga over his remarks about the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

Through a post on X on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, Methu accused the governor of insensitivity and arrogance following Kahiga’s comments made during a funeral in Nyeri.

“Governor Kahiga has decided that he and recklessness will walk hand in hand. That was an extremely unfortunate statement,” said Methu.

“At a time when the nation is mourning, such remarks dishonour the dignity of leadership.”

Governor Kahiga’s remarks, delivered in Kikuyu at a burial, have drawn widespread condemnation after a video of the event went viral.

In the clip, Kahiga suggests that Raila Odinga’s death was “God’s plan,” claiming it would allow the Mt. Kenya region to “enjoy state resources” once again.

“You can see what had been planned, but God brought something up,” Kahiga said. “Now it’s total confusion. We did not harbour hate for anyone, but God came through for us. The plan that had been hatched… all goodies were being directed elsewhere, but God came and brought this thing.”

What Governor Mutahi Kahiga said about Raila

“People have been told to go back to the drawing board because the plan that was there was probably to throw us out. But who is God? He came through in his own way. He saw people in heaven disagreeing and came for Baba so he could go and smooth things up there,” Kahiga said.

The remarks have been interpreted as mocking and politicising the death of the long-serving opposition leader.

Methu’s condemnation joins a growing list of political voices decrying Kahiga’s statements.

East African Community Principal Secretary Caroline Karugu described them as “silly and deeply unfortunate,” while former Nominated Senator Millicent Omanga accused the Nyeri governor of fueling ethnic division.

“Ethnic profiling is unacceptable, more so when it comes from elected leaders,” Omanga said.

Governor Kahiga has not issued an apology but maintains that his remarks were taken out of context.

Nonetheless, the backlash continues to grow, with calls mounting for restraint and respect during a period of national mourning.
