The Democracy for Citizens Party Leader, Rigathi Gachagua, has claimed that President William Ruto spends millions of shillings to hold meetings in the Mt Kenya region.

Speaking during an exclusive interview with a local TV station on Sunday, October 5, 2025, Gachagua said he does not spend any money to mobilise crowds, unlike his 2027 rival.

Gachagua insisted that his support across the region is organic and not bought through handouts. He stated that wherever he goes, people welcome him warmly without being paid.

Gachagua said, “Wherever I go, I get a rousy welcome. I don’t pay anyone. I don’t spend money apart from fuel or batteries for the microphones.”

He contrasted his approach with that of President William Ruto, alleging that Ruto’s political engagements in Mt Kenya come at a hefty cost.

“As opposed to my opponent, William Ruto, for him to address any meeting in the Mt Kenya region, he spends a minimum of Ksh10M. His MPs spend Ksh2 or Ksh3M. His deputy spends Ksh5M. All these guys who attend those meetings are paid.”

Gachagua further claimed that residents of the Mt Kenya region are aware of the payments made to attend such events.

“If you don’t pay them, they will start saying Wantam. I told my people to charge those guys to come and listen to them. The moment William Ruto and his people take off, they start shouting Wantam,” he said.

Gachagua exposes Ruto

The former Deputy President suggested that Ruto’s political strategy depends heavily on financial mobilisation, unlike his own, which he says is built on loyalty and genuine connection with the people.

Gachagua emphasised that his popularity comes from years of service and trust within the region.

Political analysts believe these remarks signal the growing political rivalry between Gachagua and President Ruto ahead of the 2027 general elections.

As campaigns intensify, both leaders are expected to strengthen their foothold in Mt Kenya, a region seen as crucial for any presidential victory.

Gachagua’s statement has sparked heated debate across the political divide, with supporters and critics taking sides on social media.
