Gachagua reveals why he was against Mt Kenya musicians visiting Kindiki
The former Deputy President, Rigathi Gachagua, while speaking to the diaspora community during his U.S. tour, came out to explain why he was against Mt Kenya musicians visiting Deputy President Kithure Kindiki’s office.
While addressing the diaspora on Saturday, July 12, 2025, in his usual humorous and joyful manner, he said that the role of musicians is to entertain the people and provide artistic relief during difficult times—not to visit State House and promote government agendas that, according to him, are burdensome to the public.

He argued that musicians should sing to the people, not sell them government narratives while they are hurting.
He further stated that musicians cannot be seen aligning themselves with the president and then return to perform for the very people who feel frustrated by that same leadership.
“The other day they were trying to coerce these musicians to go and sing for them and lie to the people of Kenya that SHA is working, and I told them that you musicians, that is not your work; your work is to sing for us so that we can sleep well.
“Your work is to entertain us when we are relaxing. There is no way you can be with the president and come to sing to the people who are frustrated by Kasongo,” Gachagua said.
Mt Kenya musicians’ songs
Gachagua noted that most Mt Kenya musicians typically sing about love, relationships, and the normal aspects of life. He advised them to stick to those themes and stay away from politics and government propaganda.
According to him, musicians should not try to convince disillusioned citizens that the government is building roads or delivering services when people are already tired and disappointed.
“90 per cent of their songs are about love and relationships; stick to that agenda: courtship, broken marriage, the normal things of life. As long as our artistes stick to their script to sing for us the songs and are not telling us that roads are being constructed, we can see them,” he added.
He went on to caution popular Mt. Kenya Mugithi musician Samidoh not to fall into that trap, insisting that Kenyans are too smart to be deceived.
