Gachagua keeps up attacks on Ruto after Gilgil teargas chaos

Democracy for Citizens Party Leader Rigathi Gachagua has added his voice to the chaotic scenes that marred a political meeting organised by his allies in Gilgil on Saturday, August 2, 2025.
In a statement shared through his X page, the former DP placed the blame right on President William Ruto, whom he accused of directing the disruption through the Interior Cabinet Secretary, Kipchumba Murkomen.
“Once again, our team’s public participation meeting was rudely disrupted by the police, following clear instructions from Mr. William Ruto and his protégé Kipchumba Murkomen.
The politician, who is currently on his ongoing two-month-long tour in the USA, decried the targeting of the opposition politicians by the security apparatus, a trend he asserts is aimed at silencing and intimidating people.
Intimidation tactics
“Mr. Ruto’s fear of the unknown is gradually steering our country towards a dictatorial path, where suppression and intimidation are becoming the tools of his playbook,” he stated
In a show of solidarity, the DCP leader encouraged his team not to let the threats dampen their spirit but instead to continue with the same resolve.
The former DP further reiterated his promise to restore sanity in the country’s governance
“Despite these cowardly actions by this failed regime, our resilience and commitment have shone brighter than ever. To our team, it is always darkest before dawn. We will rewrite the wrongs and restore sanity to governance,” he added.
His remarks come moments after Nyandarua Senator John Methu had a political meeting in Gilgil brought to a halt after police lobbed teargas, bringing the function to an abrupt end.

The incident marked the second weekend in a row where the DCP brigade met the brute end of law enforcement officers. Just last Sunday, during a church event and subsequent rallies in Murang’a County, police were accused of using teargas and even live ammunition to disperse the senator and other allies of the former DP in Kigumo.
Following Saturday’s chaos, Methu took to his X page to condemn the attack. The senator further promises to continue with their anti-government gatherings.
“The police, following instructions from Mr William Samoei Ruto have once again disrupted our peaceful meeting at Gilgil Town. You can teargas us all you want, but we shall not relent. #WanTam,” Methu wrote on X.
The DCP party also condemned the incident, terming it as an affront to the rights of association enshrined in the Kenyan constitution.
“Abuse of office. Dictatorship. Cowardly. Impunity. Once again, a peaceful meet-the-people assembly has been violently disrupted by police under unlawful instructions from their superiors. What has happened in Gilgil is not only unlawful but also a direct attack on democracy and an archaic mutilation of the constitution of Kenya 2010.
“The Political Parties Act and the Constitution of Kenya guarantee every political party the right to freely engage, organise, and mobilise support across the country. These repeated and planned acts of intimidation and suppression against our party, DCP, must be called out and stopped,” the party said.
