Gachagua dismisses opposition line-up speculations, says announcement set for December 2026

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has dismissed ongoing speculation about an opposition line-up, including claims that positions have already been shared among leaders within the united opposition front.
According to him, no official agreement has been made yet regarding a flag bearer to face President William Ruto in the 2027 general election.
Speaking during his visit to Boston on Monday, July 21, 2025, Gachagua clarified that discussions on the opposition’s leadership structure are premature. He emphasised that while consultations are ongoing among various opposition figures, there is no settled candidate yet.

However, he firmly maintained that all opposition factions share one goal—to ensure that President Ruto serves only one term.
Gachagua expressed strong confidence in his own political influence, positioning himself as a front-runner in the race. He reiterated that he has both the will and capacity to mobilise national support and end Ruto’s presidency in 2027.
“I am a front runner, and I think I have the best chances to be the president. We have not settled on anybody. There is only one thing that we have agreed on: Ruto is a one-term president,” Gachagua stated.
Current focus by opposition
He further noted that opposition leaders are currently focused on strengthening their support bases across the country.
He indicated that by December 2026, the various opposition parties will meet to assess who among them has the best chance of leading a united front against President Ruto.

The intention, he added, is to settle on a single candidate capable of consolidating the opposition vote.
“Government is huge, and we will agree who takes what position provided we come up with a formula. Tumesema kila mtu aende atafute kura zake, kila mtu asanye zake pale mwisho next year after Christmas, tuketi tuweke kura kwa Meza tupige heaabu tuulizane nani atapeperusha bendera as one candidate only against William Ruto,” Gachagua added.
This comes days after saying that he contributed over 4 million votes to make Ruto president, saying that he will double it to send him home in 2027.
