Gachagua addresses claims of plotting to overthrow Ruto’s govt

Former Deputy President and Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has addressed claims of an attempt to overthrow President William Ruto’s government during the June 25 memorial protest.
Speaking during an interview on Friday night, June 27, 2025, Gachagua accused some leaders from the Kenya Kwanza of peddling falsehoods about an attempt to overthrow Ruto’s administration.
“I do not know if there is anyone who wants to overthrow William Ruto. If there was a coup, all this nonsense that there was a coup, that they wanted to overthrow Ruto, is just his boys trying to hype him and cheat him so that he does not see the reality that Kenyans are agitating for reforms,” Gachagua said.

“They want to just lie to William Ruto that all this clamour you are seeing is not genuine; Kenyans are not angry; they still love, and they still support you; they are all lies.”
He went on to explain that Kenyans are rejecting Ruto because they have realised where the problem is.
“The people of Kenya are rejecting him because, with time, they have realised where the problem is,” Gachagua said.
Attempted coup
Gachagua’s remarks come after the Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen claimed that the protesters in the Wednesday, June 25, memorial demonstrations had a motive to forcefully seize power through a coup.
Speaking during a press briefing on Thursday, June 27, 2025, Murkomen stated that the chaos witnessed had nothing to do with the protests but was an attempt to unconstitutionally overthrow the current government.

He further claimed that the organisers of the protest sought to destroy properties and loot businesses and homes belonging to politicians allied to the government.
“This has nothing to do with protests, but an unconstitutional attempt to change the regime. The police were able to foil an attempted coup. Our security agencies exercised remarkable restraint amid provocation. I want to say to the brave officers injured while protecting property against rioters and hired thugs. We feel your pain and sacrifice that embody patriotism,” he stated.
