President William Ruto’s aide, Farouk Kibet, has endorsed Boyd Were, son of the late Kasipul MP Charles Ong’ondo Were, as the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) candidate for the upcoming Kasipul parliamentary by-election.

The endorsement was made during the Ogande Girls Library, Research, Innovation and Resource Centre Fund Drive in Homabay County, on Friday, September 5, 2025.

During the event, Farouk Kibet praised Boyd Were as a capable and deserving candidate for the Kasipul parliamentary seat.

He emphasised the young politician’s suitability to serve the constituency and highlighted the importance of supporting the ODM candidate, calling on residents and party supporters to rally behind him.

“People here in Homabay say this young man is enough or not enough. He is enough to get the seat there. Let him continue. Where are the ululations of this young man? And the party is ODM. Isn’t it? Let us all say we are all ODM. Let him continue. Thank you,” he said.

Boyd Were, who had been addressing attendees before Farouk’s intervention, acknowledged the contributions of key leaders like Ida Odinga and Gladys Wanga in supporting girls’ empowerment and local development projects.

He conveyed greetings from Kasipul residents to the wider audience and emphasised the commitment of his community to contributing to broad-based governance.

Boyd also donated Ksh100,000 to the fund drive.

“First of all, let me thank our mother, Mama Idah Odinga, for these programs to help our girls. Mama has always led us well. To our Governor, Mama Gladys Wanga, thank you for always proving that devolution always works. I have brought greetings from Kasipul. And the people of Kasipul have told me to tell our honoured guests that after here in Homabay, I should invite them to Kasipul to bring us the fruits of broad-based government. And they have said they are fully supportive,” he said.

The Kasipul parliamentary seat became vacant following the assassination of Charles Ong’ondo Were on April 30, 2025.

The former MP was gunned down along Ngong Road in Nairobi in what authorities described as a targeted killing, prompting the police and Parliament to review security protocols for legislators.

The late MP’s death sparked a competitive political environment, with several aspirants, including businessman Nathan Aroko, expressing interest in the seat.

Boyd Were has positioned himself as a natural successor, leveraging his father’s legacy and long-standing support base.

During his father’s burial on May 9, 2025, he vowed that his family would not be intimidated and reaffirmed his commitment to advocating for the people of Kasipul.

“First of all, as a family we are not intimidated, we can’t be intimidated,” Boyd told a packed gathering of local leaders, supporters, and fellow mourners.

Mzee was a fearless person, and what I am sure of he never raised a coward. So, for those who thought by intimidating by eliminating dad, they will succeed, that will not happen. It will not disrupt our cause for the people of Kasipul,” he added.
