Family of Kiambu bride buried on her wedding day reveals cause of death

The family of Regina Nduta Kungu, the Kiambu woman who was laid to rest on the very day she was meant to walk down the aisle, has revealed the heartbreaking details surrounding her sudden death.
Her nephew, who spoke to the media following her burial on Saturday, August 23, 2025, revealed that Regina had been unwell in the days leading up to her death and had often complained of a persistent toothache.
He revealed that she suddenly began convulsing in the early hours of one morning, as she engaged in a conversation with her husband.
She was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
“She had been unwell and complaining of a toothache. Unfortunately, one morning as she was speaking with her husband, she suddenly started convulsing. She was rushed to hospital, but sadly, she was declared dead. Yesterday, we gathered to bid farewell to my aunt who passed away two weeks ago,” he said.

The nephew also explained that the burial was uniquely decorated with balloons and flowers because the family wanted to honour what would have been her 25th wedding anniversary.
He said they felt it was only right to grant her the dream wedding she had always cherished, even in death.
He noted that this was the reason her funeral procession resembled a wedding ceremony, a symbolic fulfilment of her wish.
“The reason we decorated her burial procession with flowers and balloons is that this was supposed to be her 25th wedding anniversary. It was meant to take place on that very day, so we felt it was only right to fulfil her wish because she loved her wedding so much,” he added.
At the burial, bridesmaids wore pink gowns and flower girls were dressed in white, while the men wore brown suits with pink lace details tucked in their pockets.
The event was attended by hundreds, but the atmosphere was filled with grief and disbelief, as the day that had been anticipated as a joyous celebration of love turned into a sombre farewell.
A report by a local Kikuyu TV station indicated that Regina was to celebrate the renewal of her 25-year marriage vows at ACK Njunu Church, but instead, the same day marked her final journey.
In a rare and emotional gesture, her bridal team chose to wear the very outfits they had prepared for the wedding, and some parts of the ceremony were carried out as planned, only this time, in her memory.
The report further disclosed that a post-mortem examination revealed pneumonia in her lungs as the cause of death.
