Drama unfolded in the Senate as senators briefly interrupted Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja’s address on the controversial death of social media influencer Albert Ojwang.

The Inspector General of Police, alongside Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) boss, Mohamed Amin, were all in the chamber for interrogations over the gruesome death of the teacher on Sunday, June 8, 2025, while under police custody.

The session, however, threatened to turn tumultuous after MPs demanded to speak and interrogate the delegation standing to address the House on a procedural motion.

Drama ensued moments after the Interior CS finished his address to the House and called up the IG for his address.

Senators clamour

The call did not sit well with the chamber, with a section of senators ostensibly demanding to put the CS to questions.

Central to their concern was the demand to be accorded the opportunity to raise points of order.

With the impasse not subsiding and Kanja having resumed his seat, Kingi was compelled to seek the indulgence of the house leadership, calling both the majority and minority leaders for a brief consultation session before giving in to the senators’ demands.

The speaker’s concession was, however, not without chiding the senators to mind their conduct. He, particularly at one instance, reminded the house that they had convened for a serious matter and not for TikTok bites.

Kingi’s assurances

“The CS has made his statement, and he will be open to interrogation over this matter. Honourable senators, you will have an opportunity to ask questions. So the IG can now proceed,” the speaker said after consultations.

Kanja would later continue with his address.

In his address earlier, Murkomen pledged full government intervention towards ensuring justice for the late Albert Ojwang’.

“I promise the family of Albert Ojwang’, the people of Kenya, and this August House that every effort will be put forth to make sure justice is served.”

“I would like to send my personal condolences to the family of Mr. Albert Ojwang, to his father, his mother, his wife, and their only child, and promise them that as a government official, I will put effort within my ministry to ensure that justice is served.”

“Those who were involved in these actions will be punished severely so it becomes an example that such an act should not happen within police custody,” he affirmed.
