Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa has dismissed Rigathi Gachagua’s resignation from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), arguing that the former deputy president’s political separation from the ruling party was already a settled matter.

In a scathing statement posted on his X account on Monday, May 12, 2025, Barasa mocked Gachagua’s decision to formally exit UDA, asserting that the alliance between the two had long dissolved the moment Gachagua “fled to Wamunyoro village”.

“Listen @rigathi, your purported resignation is hereby declared null and void ab initio. The dissolution of your political alliance was finalised the moment you fled to Wamunyoro village. A decree absolute was issued, severing all ties,” Barasa stated.

He further likened Gachagua’s current political affiliations, particularly with the Wiper Party, to an unauthorised cohabitation, emphasising that the Mathira politician was now operating “from an erroneous premise.”

“A decree absolute was issued, severing all ties. Your subsequent association with the Wiper Party constitutes an unauthorised cohabitation, and you are hereby notified that you are operating from an erroneous premise,” he added.

Adding a dramatic flair to his rebuke, Barasa criticised Gachagua’s shifting loyalties with a cryptic flourish, directing him to seek a singular melon that thrives from “Limpopo’s southern flow to the Sahara’s northern sands.”

“Seek now the singular melon that thrives from Limpopo’s southern flow to the Sahara’s northern sands. Wed your fate to it, or remain forever adrift,” he stated.

Resignation announcement

Barasa’s comments come hours after Gachagua, in a strongly worded letter addressed to the UDA Secretary-General, announced his resignation from the party with immediate effect.

In the letter, dated May 12, 2025, Gachagua accused the party leadership of betraying its founding ideals and squandering what he described as a national moment for transformation.

He claimed UDA had devolved into a vehicle for what he termed “a retrogressive philosophy of an unfit class to govern our nation,” and described the ruling coalition’s promise of economic inclusion as “a lie.”

“By a copy of this letter, you are notified that I have officially resigned from the UDA Party with immediate effect,” Gachagua wrote.

“I have made this decision in the knowledge of the ideals of the Party we believed in… but now it has turned out as the most dangerous political moment for the people and the Republic of Kenya. No nation can be built on a litany of lies,” he added.

He stated that the UDA administration had failed in key areas it had promised to transform, including agriculture, healthcare, housing, women’s affairs, and digital infrastructure.

“The dream for the Hustler Fund, as it were, was to lift Kenyans at the bottom of the economic pyramid. What business can Ksh500 start sustainably?” he posed.

UDA’s response

In response, UDA Secretary General Hassan Omar dismissed Gachagua’s resignation as both redundant and an attempt to escape the record of his leadership failures.

“The UDA Party took note of the grounds of your impeachment in October last year. We moved with the stealth of national conscience to equally remove you as the Deputy Party Leader. Your belated resignation is a futile attempt to rewrite the facts of your incompetence arising from your inability to understand and execute the mandate of your office. You distinguished yourself as the worst of the tribal bigots to hold such high office in Kenya. I am sure Kenya will never again have your likes in national leadership,” Omar stated in a press release dated May 12, 2025.

Omar accused Gachagua of political regression, saying he relied on tribal mobilization and archaic politics to sustain his base.

“Through your resignation, the Party has now fully offloaded a toxic, archaic, polarizing and vicious individual who continues to attempt to tear down the fabric of the nation,” he wrote.
